The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Machine Gunner Charles Artoni, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with AS. 307, 3d Battalion of Light Tanks, Assault Artillery, Army of France, near Massif Blanc Mont, France, October 3 – 8, 1918. During attacks by the Second American Division, Gunner Artoni distinguished himself by volunteering twice for hazardous duty; first to take food to the firing line, and later to replace a wounded comrade as liaison agent. His personal courage and coolness under heavy fire was marked.
