Zavitz (ASN: 280675), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 126th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Romagne, France, 9 October 1918. Facing heavy fire, Sergeant Zavitz crawled 75 yards in advance of the platoon he commanded and reduced a machine-gun nest with rifle grenades.
