The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Ray Winters (ASN: 1467824), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 110th Engineers, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Baulny, France, 30 September 1918. In the face of an enemy counterattack and while exposing himself to intense machine-gun and artillery fire, Sergeant Winters advanced 300 yards beyond our lines to rescue a wounded soldier. He administered first aid to the wounded man and then carried him back to our lines.
