The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Philip Hearn Williamson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 1st Anti-Aircraft Machine-Gun Battalion, American Expeditionary Forces, near Thiaucourt, France, from 10 to 26 September 1918. First Lieutenant Williamson displayed extreme coolness and courage while conducting the advance of his company in the sector near Thiaucourt. He visited daily, under heavy shell fire, his gun positions and made daily reconnaissances of the lines. When wounded, he refused to be taken to the hospital until he had superintended the removal of his men to a place of safety.
