While serving with Ambulance Company No. 26, 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon, France, on 6 October 1918, during violent artillery fire, without thought of personal safety Mechanic Vargo repeatedly went through the area, rendering first aid and carrying to safety the wounded.
