By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Asa D. Reed (ASN: 1193493), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving as Mess Sergeant with the 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Reed remained at the kitchen in performance of his duties preparing hot soup, chocolate and other nourishing foods for slightly wounded, even under the hottest shell fire. He showed absolutely no sign of fear in his conscientious devotion to duty and when everyone else had deserted the kitchen to seek refuge from fragments of exploding shells he remained at his post, furnishing the most inspiring example to the men of the organization.
