By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Joseph Mitton (ASN: 1550717), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Mitton displayed extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, on 14 – 15 July 1918, during the German Offensive. Private Mitton repeatedly volunteered and left a place of safety to repair telephone liens under a most severe bombardment. During the Argonne-Meuse advance at Hill 253, north of Montfaucon, Private Mitton again showed great disregard of personal safety in working on telephone lines under heavy shelling of gas and high explosive until badly burned by mustard gas.
