By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Aton E. Rauch (ASN: 306724), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Rauch displayed extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in action near Chateau-Thierry on 14 – 15 July 1918. Sergeant Rauch, then a Telephone Corporal, repeatedly volunteered to go out and repair the frequent breaks under very severe shelling during the night and day of the German Offensive. During the critical moments of battle, Sergeant Rauch, by his disregard of danger, in promptly repairing breaks, maintained communication over his lines, so vital to effective fire from his battery.
