By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant John J. V. Pearsall (ASN: 1551238), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery F, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the fighting in the vicinity of the Meuse River during the months of October and the first ten days of November 1918, Sergeant Pearsall displayed exceptional qualities of leadership and conspicuous courage. Repeatedly in daylight and in open view of the enemy under heavy fire and at night under aerial bombardment, he courageously led his ammunition details regardless of great personal danger, to the forward battery positions. He exhibited the same exceptional qualities as a gunner and action chief even when the enemy sought to silence his battery.
