By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant William A. Kelley (ASN: 1551219), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery F, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 14 October 1918, though suffering greatly from gas and in a sate of exhaustion which developed to be due to pneumonia, Sergeant Kelley voluntarily took charge of a section which was under heavy fire and continued the interrupted service of the piece for forty-eight hours.
