By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Field Artillery) John A. Hettinger, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Captain Hettinger displayed extreme devotion and faithful and excellent performance of his duties as Battery Commander, Battery E, 76th Field Artillery, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. In the vicinity of Montfaucon, where the Germans on Hill 253 were striving desperately to withstand the American attacks, at great personal risk he did skillful Observation Post work, enabling his battery and battalion to render excellent support to the Infantry until he was wounded and evacuated. Later, having recovered from his wound and returning to duty, he skillfully handled his battery in the fighting east of the Meuse. On 10 November 1918, in the Bois de Remoiville, where, owing to heavy enemy artillery fire some units were retreating in disorder, he coolly placed his battery in position and by the example he set his men, assisted them materially in performing their duties.
