By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Knute Thorpe (ASN: 1430877), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Verdun-Argonne-Meuse engagements, twice each day Private Thorpe brought food to the men at the firing battery regardless of the intensity of the shell fire. During the several days when the road was closed because of heavy shell fire he made his regular trips over the roads and persisted in a determination to get through to his comrades at the battery.
