By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Franzen (ASN: 1038358), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Franzen served with his battery faithfully and courageously throughout the entire actions on the Marne, St. Mihiel, and the Argonne, being at all times cheerful and efficient in the performance of his duties. On the morning of 15 July 1918, on the Marne, during the enemy attack he volunteered his services as driver to carry ammunition over roads that were being heavily shelled and after several of his companions had fallen in an effort to reach the battery.
