By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Joseph Whitcavage (ASN: 1038427), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private First Class Whitcavage served as cannoneer courageously and efficiently during the entire operations on the Marne, at St. Mihiel and in the Argonne, and when all ammunition had been expended, 15 July 1918, voluntarily carried ammunition by hand from a dump more than a mile distant, making two trips over a road that was being violently shelled.
