    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Lloyd T. Gillette (ASN: 170083), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private First Class Gillette rendered courageous and efficient service as telephone operator during the action on the Marne and St. Mihiel. During the operation north of Verdun, 13 October 1918, while acting as telephone operator for a forward platoon, he maintained constant communication between the two pieces under the greatest difficulties, the line being broken several times by shell fire and it being necessary for him to make repairs while exposed to heavy shell fire, machinegun and rifle fire, from two sides. During the day he voluntarily carried three messages between his platoon and battery commanders, each time being exposed to heavy fire.
