The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Jess White (ASN: 2471590), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Nantillois, France, 5 October 1918. Corporal White led his squad across an area swept by machine-gun and shell fire with utter disregard for his personal danger. Although he was severely wounded by machine-gun bullets, he continued to direct his squad until completely exhausted from loss of blood.
