    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Alfred M. Anspaugh (ASN: 1038294), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the entire engagement on the Marne, Corporal Anspaugh served in a gun squad efficiently and courageously and when ammunition ran out, carried ammunition by hand more than a mile, making two trips over a road that was under such heavy bombardment as to be impassable for vehicles. During the operation north of Verdun, 13 October 1918, while a member of the crew of a forward gun, he did valiantly served his piece until the last round of ammunition had been expended and while exposed to heavy shell, machine gun, and rifle fire from two directions.
