During the operations north of Verdun on 13 October 1918, he was Chief of Section in charge of a forward piece and during a violent enemy counterattack remained in charge of his piece until the last round of ammunition had been fired, and while exposed to heavy shell fire from two directions; his splendid example of coolness and courage being at all times an inspiration to his men.
