By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private George Whitcomb (ASN: 84541), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company B, 9th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Whitcomb, although seriously wounded while acting as loader, refused to be evacuated until ordered to do so by his Platoon Commander. With utter disregard to personal safety he went under heavy artillery and machine gun fire to four other gun crews and requested men be sent to his gun. By doing this a very important gun was enabled to fire throughout the action. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
