By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) William F. Thorpe, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, from 3 October 1918, at Montfaucon, France, Lieutenant Thorpe conducted the firing of Battery E, 10th Field Artillery under shell fire and gas, staying at his post as Executive with the guns and gun crews, at all times helping the gun crews when necessary and always keeping up the morale of his men regardless of his own personal safety.
