By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) John L. Weeks, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 9th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the Marne River, near Crezancy, France, during the night of 14 and 15 July 1918, when all communication had been cut off, Captain Weeks went forward with utter disregard for his own safety and brought direct order from the Battalion Commander to the companies. The assistance he rendered and the information he furnished the Battalion in the capacity of Reconnaissance Officer were largely responsible for its successful operation.
