By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) Claude W. Sheldon, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 9th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Champagne-Marne Defensive, 14 – 18 July 1918, with disregard for personal danger, Captain Sheldon led his company over the top in the attack, and although at one time almost entirely cut off by the enemy, he organized his position, and by his coolness was able to inspire his men to hold despite his company sustaining severe losses. He was seriously wounded, yet refused to be evacuated until the condition of his Company had been bettered by reinforcements.
