    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Leonard Everett Nogle (ASN: 553909), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of our attack on 4 October 1918, north of Cierges, France, Sergeant Nogle commanded his section in the attack. During the advance many infantrymen were wounded and in the absence of first aid men Sergeant Nogle, always exposed to heavy enemy fire, repeatedly went to their assistance. At the same time he was always courageously leading his own men, looking out for their safety and selecting places of cover for them. Then the attack was finally halted, Sergeant Nogle consolidated his positions and prepared for defense.
