    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Charles R. Hoyle (ASN: 553915), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, early in the morning of 15 July 1918, Sergeant Hoyle was caught in an open field southeast of Nesles, France, by the terrific bombardment of the enemy. He crawled 500 meters to his Post of Command, but disregarding personal safety, and knowing the terrain perfectly, he repeatedly exposed himself to intense artillery fire in order to direct men to places of safety.
