By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald Campbell, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, early on the morning of 15 July 1918 while the enemy bombardment was heavy, Lieutenant Campbell made a personal reconnaissance of the sector occupied by the 5th Brigade along the Marne near Chateau-Thierry, France. He passed through the Bois de Egremont where enormous shells were tearing up the woods and men were being killed and wounded by scores; he visited the Post of Command, 7th Infantry Regiment and gathered all available information; he visited all companies of his organization, passing along heavily shelled trails and through woods filled with gas, and then visited the Post of Command, 4th Infantry. His prompt action early on this morning when the terrific bombardment made adequate liaison almost impossible enabled in Commanding Officer to furnish the Brigade Commander valuable reports.
