By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Homer L. Castle, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Medical Detachment, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Castle demonstrated exceptional heroism and military skill at Le Charmel, France, on 25 July 1918. Entering this town according to orders for the purpose of establishing an aid station, Sergeant Castle found it in the possession of the enemy, who fired upon him and his men. By skillful maneuvering he was able to extricate himself from his perilous position and to take his command safely past a German patrol, snipers and machine guns. His devotion to duty was of the highest order.
