By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private William J. Fillyan (ASN: 2340137), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Medical Detachment, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the attack on Woods 250 southwest of Cunel, Private Fillyan was attached to Company D as First Aid Man and worked continuously under constant shelling, even though wounded and ordered to the rear by his company commander, until he was seriously wounded again and taken back on a litter, even then protesting. His exceptional courage was an inspiration to all.
