The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class John B. F. Walters (ASN: 96995), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 167th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the vicinity of Ancerviller, France, on the night of May 3 – 4, 1918. While a member of a patrol in “No Man’s Land,” Private First Class Walters displayed great self-sacrifice in refusing aid and continuing to do his duty after being mortally wounded.
