The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Joseph F. Waldron (ASN: 2387671), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 61st Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois-de-la-Grande Fontaine, France, 16 September 1918. While serving as a company mail carrier, Private Waldron repeatedly volunteered and carried important messages through machine-gun and artillery fire. Although severely wounded in the head and neck, he continued to accomplish his dangerous missions, refusing medical treatment until ordered to the rear by his company commander.
