Hubert Ver Mehren’s father encouraged both of his sons to enlist at the beginning of World War I. While Hubert Ver Mehren was serving in France earning the Distinguished Service Cross, his brother was a fugitive who escaped from the guard house at Fort Dodge, where he was being held for evading the draft.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant First Class Hubert Ver Mehren (ASN: 915581), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 7th Engineers (Attached), 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Brandeville, France, November 8 – 10, 1918. On November 8 and 10 November Sergeant Ver Mehren showed utter disregard for his own personal danger in giving first aid to wounded and carrying them to a place of safety, under intense machine-gun and shell fire.
