The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Anthony Vedral (ASN: 57142), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 9 October 1918. Assuming command of the platoon, Sergeant Vedral led it forward to its objective. When he arrived at the line, he found that his company had been cut off by the enemy barrage. He therefore consolidated his position with the few men he commanded and held it for 18 hours under most terrific bombardment.
