The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Joe H. Vaughan (ASN: 1315516), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mazinghein, France, 18 October 1918. After several others had failed in the attempt, Sergeant Vaughan crossed ground swept by heavy enemy fire and established liaison with the British unit operating on the flank, volunteering for the mission.
