    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Carl Tuftin (ASN: 3752519), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Sommauthe, France, November 4 – 5, 1918. Private Tuftin volunteered for dangerous outpost service within the enemy line. He worked his way behind enemy machine-guns, was wounded, but refused to leave his post, and, by the skillful use of his automatic rifle, assisted in driving the enemy from their entrenched positions. Private Tuftin refused to leave his post, until the battalion was relieved.
