The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Harrison Tompkins (ASN: 1698550), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-la Naza, France, 5 October 1918. In the face of heavy machine-gun and grenade fire Sergeant Tompkins went forward, with three other soldiers, and brought back five seriously wounded men to a point where they could be given first-aid treatment. With utter disregard for his personal safety, he displayed courage, coolness, and good judgment in effecting the rescue.
