The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private William P. Tignor (ASN: 1821167), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Sommauthe, France, November 4 – 7, 1918. Acting as a scout, Private Tignor repeatedly went forward, and by calling and making noises, drew machine-gun fire upon himself in order to locate machine-gun nests, which were subsequently put out of action.
