No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Waldo Thompson, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private First Class Thompson distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 2d Field Battalion, Signal Corps, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action 3 May 1918. Corporal Chase worked on Signal Corps lines in spite of a continuous bombardment and gas attack thus assisting in maintaining communications within the shelled area.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Waldo Thompson (ASN: 198774), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 2d Field Signal Battalion, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Exermont, France, 5 October 1918. Corporal Thompson voluntarily went forward in the face of a most destructive bombardment, and kept in repair the telephone line connecting the infantry and artillery, thereby assuring the close co-operation between these two elements.
