The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant James Sutherland (ASN: 2448847), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Forest of Argonne, France, 3 October 1918. Displaying exceptional devotion to duty and conspicuous courage, Sergeant Sutherland led his platoon up the steep slope of a ravine, under murderous machine-gun fire in an attack on a series of strong enemy machine-gun nests; and, in so doing was seriously wounded.
