The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Francis Scott Sutherland (ASN: 3206525), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 321st Infantry Regiment, 81st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the St. Die sector, France, 9 October 1918. During a heavy bombardment Corporal Sutherland maintained liaison between his combat group and his company commander, crossing completely unprotected ground under terrific barrage, and supplying his group at the same time with much needed ammunition.
