The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Harvey Pratt Stickles (ASN: 92284), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 166th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, northeast of Chateau-Thierry, France, July 29 – 30, 1918. Several times during the night of 29 July 1918, and three times during the afternoon of 30 July 1918, Private Stickles left the shelter of battalion headquarters and went out into an intense bombardment to repair telephone lines connecting battalion and regimental command posts. He had several narrow escapes and was once thrown to the ground by the burst of an exploding shell, yet he continued to perform his important work after others had failed.
