    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Otto Staeheli, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Cunel, France, 12 October 1918. Lieutenant Staeheli personally led a platoon in the attack of Hill 258. He rushed 25 yards ahead of his platoon and single-handed captured three of the enemy. His platoon, inspired by his deeds, succeeded in forcing 63 others to surrender.
