The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Infantry) Lorillard Suydam Spencer, III, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 369th Infantry Regiment, 93d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Champagne Sector, France, 26 September 1918. Commanding a battalion which was in action for the first time, Major Spencer inspired his men by his own coolness and courage under intense machine-gun fire. He continually exposed himself without regard for personal safety until he was wounded six times.
