Smith (ASN: 1783200), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon, France, 27 September 1918. Sergeant Smith advanced alone and silenced a machine-gun nest which was holding up the advance of his section.
