The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Bernard Schultheis (ASN: 264586), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 125th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Terny-Sorny, north of Soissons, France, 1 September 1918. When the infantry was advancing in a position exposed to cross fire, he volunteered and carried a message to the advancing troops, informing them that a machine-gun barrage laid down on the enemy emplacements was friendly fire from a unit not in their support and acting without orders to cover their advance. He delivered the message, returned across an open field swept by enemy machine-guns and thereby made it possible for the infantry unit to advance 400 meters and gain its objective.
