The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Herman L. McNulty, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 354th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Remonville, France, 1 November 1918. At the head of his company following close upon the barrage, First Lieutenant McNulty inspired his men by his personal valor, and, when wounded by a machine-gun bullet in the leg, refused to be evacuated. After his wound had been bound up he continued with his company in the advance, remaining on duty till the objective had been reached and consolidated.
