The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Edward Roy Mclaughlin (ASN: 2431613), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 18 October 1918. The platoon of which Private McLaughlin was a member was cut off from the rest of the company by an intense artillery barrage. It was imperative to communicate with company headquarters. He delivered a message through extremely heavy fire. While on the return trip with the reply he was hit by an enemy shell and instantly killed.
