The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Stewart J. McKendry (ASN: 132500), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery E, 17th Field Artillery, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vaux, France, 1 July 1918. Private McKendry performed his duty of telephone line repairman with great bravery and promptness in spite of intense bombardment of the area where he had to work, going fearlessly and without waiting to be ordered when communication was broken.
