The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal George G. McDonald (ASN: 1762843), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Grand Pre, France, 1 November 1918. While accompanying a separated detachment Corporal McDonald voluntarily entered a dense woods, infested with snipers and machine-guns, to locate the main body of his company. The success of this mission enabled the lost detachment to occupy their position with the company. During the entire action of his company, Corporal McDonald was forever eager, in his capacity as runner, to assume the most hazardous risks to maintain liaison between units.
