The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Walter Thomas McCunn (ASN: 2412654), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 303d Engineers (Attached), 78th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Thiaucourt, France, 29 September 1918. Private McCunn was administering first aid to two wounded comrades in No Man’s Land, under heavy shell fire, when an exploding shell killed both of the wounded, rendering him unconscious for more than an hour. Upon his recovery, lie remained at his post, administering treatment to others.
