The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Doaley Mays (ASN: 555062), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 9th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Connigis, France, 15 July 1918. Sergeant Mays, single-handed, operated a machine gun after the remainder of his squad had become casualties from enemy machine-gun fire. Although exposed to heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, he continued to fire his gun until assistance arrived.
