The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Hugh Benson Martin (ASN: 1317775), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Busigny, France, 10 October 1918. When a battalion of infantry was held up by heavy machine-gun fire, Corporal Martin rushed his section forward to a position 300 yards in advance of our front lines, engaged and silenced the enemy, and allowed a renewal of the advance. He displayed marked personal bravery under terrific enemy fire.
